The buzzz about......Jerry Hoogland
Cathy Peterson
THE-BEE
Thursday, June 07th, 2007 09:02:12 AM

Catawba resident Jerry Hoogland has been actively involved in every Lumbermans’s Day observance since the first one took place 40 years ago.
A life-long Catawba area resident, Jerry Hoogland became a charter member of the Catawba-Kennan Lions Club when it was organized in 1966. He and the other club members knew they would need to raise money to fund their projects and thought a community activity would be a good way to do that.

“At that time, almost all of the families in the area were involved in doing some type of logging at least part-time,” he said.

After a lot of discussion, planning and work, the first Catawba Lumberman’s Day, which included a parade, logging contests, gun raffle and dance, was held in 1967 on the Sunday of the second full weekend in June. For many years, members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post and auxiliary provided the barbecued chicken dinners, Hoogland noted, but recently, the Jump River Valley Historical Society members have taken on that task.

The parade has never been rained out, although there have been some “close calls” and a few delays, he stated. The same situation applies to the logging contests, which Hoogland has helped coordinate since the first Lumberman’s Day event.

“At first, the contestants had to furnish their own saws, then local business owners, especially Maynard Severson and now his son Martin, donated the use of their saws and prizes for the winners,” he said.

Years ago, most of those competing in the crosscut saw contests were loggers who were familiar with that type of saw, Hoogland stated. In recent years, he noted, many of the contestants are more familiar with mechanized saws and have little experience with the saw, which is a two-person operation.

“The logging contests haven’t changed much, but about 10 years ago, we added a wood splitting competition and a popple peeling contest for kids as a way to keep them interested in competing in the future,” he said.

For many area families, including his own, he said, peeling popple has been a way for young people to earn money during the summer.

“I don’t think too many kids do that any more,” he said.

Hoogland and his wife Lois, a native of Minnesota, met when she came to Prentice to attend the wedding of a cousin. They were married in 1956 and since then, most of their eight children have helped prepare for Lumberman’s Day and clean up the grounds afterward.

“At first, we held our events on the school grounds and later at the Catawba Fire Hall,” he said. “Since the Catawba Park was completed, we have been able to hold most of the activities there.”

For many years, Hoogland noted, the Lumberman’s Day dance was held at the Catawba Town Hall. When the building was purchased by the Jump River Valley Historical Society for use as a museum, the dances were held at the park in Kennan; then about five years ago, other activities were added at that location.

“That is when it became a two-day celebration and Catawba was dropped from the name of the event,” he said.

There has also been a change in the title given to the person who sells the most raffle tickets for the annual prize drawings, Hoogland stated. For many years, the winner was named “Miss Pauline Bunyan” but some time ago, at the request of a candidate, the title was changed to Lumberman’s Day Queen. One year, there were few female candidates so John Kurth and Rudy Scotch decided to see which one of them could sell the most tickets.

“Rudy won,” Hoogland said. “We hope as many of the former winners as possible will be a part of this year’s 40th anniversary parade.”

Each January, Catawba-Kennan Lions Club members begin working on that year’s celebration, Hoogland stated, and as the month of June approaches, weekly meetings are held. Several years ago, he noted, club membership was so sparse that the future of Lumberman’s Day was uncertain and those who were members paid their dues in advance in order to have the initial funds they needed.

“Since then, we have had a good increase in active membership, including several younger men and women who work very hard to make Lumberman’s Day a success,” he said. “We also have help from a number of volunteers, who are not Lions Club members, as well as community organizations.”

When Lumberman’s Day began, Hoogland noted, club members were pleased if they made $1,000; in recent years, the annual event has made about 10 times that amount. He said the club contributes to many different Wisconsin Lions Foundation programs but members believe that it is important to fund local projects, too.

“We have been able to increase the number and the amount of the scholarships we award to high school seniors,” he said. “We also sponsor a yearly gun raffle and a turkey shoot, but Lumberman’s Day is our main fund-raiser.”

A dairy farmer for many years, Hoogland retired when his son Jeff, his daughter-in-law Lori and their family took over the farming operation. Within a few months, he became a school bus driver for the Phillips School District.

“I guess it’s a good thing that the bus driving position was available,” he said.”I like to keep busy so a part-time job works out fine.”

The Wisconsin Lions recently held a weekend district convention at the Greater Beloit Ramada Inn, whereas many delegates from throughout the state gathered to hear key speakers, attend various seminars, vote on issues, and enjoy great hospitality.

The committee would like to thank the following local groups for helping make the convention the success that it was: the many ad sponsors, Beloit Daily News, Beloit Memorial Hospital diabetes educators, Frito-Lay, Inc., Ramada Inn, Rock River Harmonizers, Senz Insurance, Thelma Wilcox' jazz trio, WGEZ Radio, Visit Beloit Bureau, Beloit Noon/Evening Lions, Lionesses, Leos Clubs, and anyone else we've mistakenly overlooked.

Many positive comments were received by delegates who enjoyed their visit to Beloit, and we thank all those above for helping to make it happen.

The Bangor Lions Club took the Lions’ motto — “We serve” — to its literal extreme March 4 when members served more than 1,100 pancake and sausage breakfasts.

“People look forward to this event every year, and they do not want to miss it,” said Lions Club member Harvey Langrehr.

Once a year is usually just about enough pancake making for the Bangor Lions, but this year they plan to turn around and do it again on Sunday, April 22. The April event is a special fundraiser to benefit the Bangor First Responders, who are planning a new building for their headquarters.

In addition to serving pancakes, the Lions also promoted diabetes awareness, the leading cause of adult blindness and a sneaky syndrome — 2 percent of the population has diabetes and doesn’t know it.

While the April 22 pancake proceeds will go to the First Responders, the Bangor Lions spread around the money they raise from the annual pancake breakfast and other fundraisers throughout the year.

During the past two years, the Bangor Lions donated $9,000 to the Wisconsin Lions Camp for kids with disabilities, $2,000 to leader dog programs and more to other Lions programs.

In the community, the club contributed $3,000 each to the First Responders and Fire Department and more than $3,500 to school-related causes for such things as scholarships, post-prom party, athletics and cheerleaders.

The club also gave hundreds of dollars to Bangor organizations such as the VFW, Bangor Rod and Gun Club, emergency food pantries and individuals with catastrophic health or disaster needs.

The Lions also put on programs for kids, including Punt, Pass and Kick and Hot Shot contests.

People interested in joining the Lions can come to the monthly meetings, which are held starting at 7:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at the Village Inn.

Anson fire truck heading to Mexico
By ROD STETZER rstetzer@chippewa.com

Sleek and modern, it’s not.

But the shiny red vehicle Ken Bowe and Christine Anderson will drive to the U.S.-Mexico border can still help save lives or a family’s home.

The two Jim Falls Lions Club members are leaving Friday, Feb. 2 for McAllen, Texas, driving a 1964 Ford fire truck donated to the club last year by the Anson Fire Department.

It will be part of a caravan with one other donated fire truck and a trailer full of eyeglasses, medical supplies and school supplies.

The Anson fire truck no longer passes state of Wisconsin inspections. But it will be gratefully accepted by a delegation from the city of Ciudad Miguel Aleman in the state of Nuevo Leon in Mexico.

“We don’t know where the fire truck will end up,” said Bowe. “They will take it where they need it.”

And along with the fire truck will be fire coats, hoses, ladders and boats donated by the Anson department.

“They have no need for it anymore,” said Anderson, a past president of the Jim Falls Lions, the organization that sponsors the Sturgeon Festival each Labor Day weekend .

Then starting Feb. 8, Bowe and Anderson will spend a few days in Miguel Aleman, a city of 17,000 named after a late president of Mexico, located about midway between Nuevo Laredo and Reynes.

While there, Bowe and Anderson will help with distributing and fitting eyeglasses to whoever needs them.

“They said we can expect to be fitting 1,000 to 2,000 people,” Anderson said.

It’s all part of the Wisconsin Lions Club’s “Mission to Mexico.” That humanitarian effort began in 1991 and has grown since.

It fits with the primary mission of the Lions Club, which is helping people with vision problems.

For example, the Jim Falls Lions are scheduled in February and March to take donated corneas from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls to Tomah.

“We have 10 to 12 transporters in our club alone,” Anderson said.

From Tomah, another Lions Club will take the corneas to Portage, where another club will pick them up and take them to the Wisconsin Eye Bank in Madison.

On Jan. 6, the Jim Falls club also took 675 pairs of donated eyeglasses to the Wisconsin Lions camp in Rosholt.

Anderson said people can help by donating their old eyeglasses to any Lions Club member, or dropping them off at boxes at Gordy’s County Market in downtown Chippewa Falls and the Cenex store in Jim Falls.

The D1 member listserve does periodic auto maintenance and purges email addresses of members that have had their mail bounce back as not being received.

This is done usually because members change their email address and it never gets deleted from the list.

It can also happen when a member's email provider decides automatically that the message it just got is spam and it doesn't forward it to the member. That's not our fault and needs to be addressed with the mail provider. The message then bounces back to our listserve and after 3 warnings sent 7 days apart, it purges the member from the list. If that happens, just go to the district website and sign up again. You might want to check with your mail provider to find out how to prevent it from happening again.

Regards:
Lion Chuck
